| Exams are almost done, and the rest two were easy, so I can start packing up for HK on the 29th. Oh forgot to put it down: I am leaving for Guangzhou on April 29th and I will go to Hong Kong to start my coop later in May.
Not much to talked about my school life, but I would like to throw some pictures taken from my concrete presentation. My group's topic is "Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emission in the Cement and Concrete Industry", and we have done a lot of work related to concrete, cement, and fly ash during the entire school term, producing a final report of more than 60 pages. The final presentation was made to the professionals from the industry and it was quite successful. Here are some pictures from the presentation:

| 因为是重要消息,所以再用中文发一次。
之前看到QB留言,问我什么时候再回广州,我还想说到2009年毕业前都不会有时间,怎知今天就收到通知,夏天可以到香港实习,虽然薪水低得简直是贴钱去打工,但是机会难得,比留在温哥华继续做"高薪"杂工好多了。这个首先要感谢Sheenagh,联系方面的事情都是她帮我们做的,我就只发了份resume,顺带一提我的"两文三语"优势。
除了"海外"(相对加拿大而言)工作经验外,去香港实习的最大好处就是可以得闲就回广州。今天夏天有不少事情:22岁生日,朋友的大学毕业仪式,阿水的水BB出生,希望到时都能拿到假期回去。
不过香港的薪水是在是低,还不如我在温哥华工资的一半,而且机票住宿都不包。所以有很多东西都要在五月出发前办妥:
1. 香港特区工作签证。这个至为重要,否则一切泡汤。
2. 住宿。第二大问题。恐怕工资的一大半都要贴在住宿上了。现在正在努力寻找房子中。顺带一提,上班地点在九龙塘,城市大学附近。如果各位有任何关于那里附近租屋的消息,烦请通知一下。
3. 通讯。主要是手机和手提电脑,又是一笔不小的开支。
4. 衣服。在温哥华工作可以穿得很随便(非T-shirt就可以了),西装是面试时才穿的,但是香港就很难讲了。而且夏天啊,这么热,总不能穿全套西装上班吧?这个真是要好好想一想,光是衣服就要又花一笔。
5. 机票。一个多月的工资就贴在机票上了,希望能找到打折的团体票。
主要问题还是前四项,如果各位能顺便帮一下忙,在下感激不尽。

| Thanks for the hard work from Sheenagh, our dearest coop coordinator, I got a job offer from an engineering consultant company in Hong Kong from May to September this year. Though the salary is really low, not even 50% of what I could get in Vancouver, I still prefer working in HK this summer because I think I can learn a lot more there than in Vancouver. Plus I can go back to Guangzhou and visit my relatives/friends during weekends and holidays! My birthday (July 15) is on Sunday this year, so I can probably spend it with my grandparents in Guangzhou. Hmm... what will be happening this summer also include my friends' university graduation ceremony, the "Water baby"'s born (already mentioned in my previous blog entry). If I get enough holiday from my company, I could go back and celebrate all this events too!
However, there are lots of things needed to be dealt with before leaving for HK in May:
- Most importantly, the HK work visa! Need to get it in time otherwise the job appointment would be cancelled
- Housing: the company provides neither accommodation nor air ticket so I have to pay them all by myself but the salary is really low. Hopefully I can get a cheap rent from friends with houses in Hong Kong
- Communication: may need to buy a laptop and cell phone (my current cell phone is not suitable with the network in HK), which is another huge expense
- Clothing: the dressing code in the HK offices could be very different from that in Vancouver which is usually very casual. May need to buy some summer business suits ( I only have winter business suits in Vancouver)
- Bank account: need to set up HK local bank account which can handle HKD, RMB, CDN and USD
- Air ticket: there are 5 other classmates who are also going to HK for coop this summer, I can probably buy a group discount ticket with them

| 虽然估计来这里的人99%都不知道阿水是谁,不过我认为很有必要为她写下我在2007年的第一篇blog。刚刚和蜡烛头聊天时,收到消息说阿水有喜了,真是让我衷心高兴的大事。阿水就是我在初中时的班主任兼英语老师,回顾一下我这些年来取得的"成就",阿水功不可没。而我在初中那三年也是最值得我怀念的记忆。
我们是阿水刚从师范毕业后教的第一批学生(想起都觉得光荣),那时她才22岁,就跟现在的我差不多,一毕业就要管一群半大不小的学生,而采取的是无为而治的方式棗大小事务都扔给班干部们做,得闲就去逛街买菜,我们初中毕业后还跟我们去去喝茶打麻将拖拉机。但是我们班三年来都没出过乱子,中考成绩更是让人羡慕,不得不归功于阿水的开明同时也要感谢我这个英明班长的劳心劳力。
十年,对不同的人有不同的概念。十年后水BB将要出生;十年后当年的小型"桃李",找工作的找工作,考研的考研,各显神通;十年后的英明班长正沉浮于太平洋对岸的某大学里过着能偷懒就偷懒的日子。
总之,废话一大堆后,就是希望水BB能顺利出生,光大水氏一族。各位偶然到此一游的小型"桃李",一同祝福吧。 | | |
| 今天在网上看到这么一句： 有人说过: 人是活着的鬼，鬼是死了的人。从这句话引申出另一句话 -- 饭是活着的屎，屎是死了的饭。鲁迅说过一句我以前早读时特别喜欢读的一句话(因为读起来够有戏剧性): "真的猛士，敢于直面惨淡的人生，敢于正视淋漓的鲜血。" 上面那位朋友敢于正视五谷轮回之物的勇气无异于敢于正视淋漓的鲜血胆量，可谓猛士也。 所以啊，现实是残酷的，真理是恐怖的。吃饭时不妨多锻炼一下自己的勇气，好早日成为猛士。 | | |
